KWSG PARTNERS NSPRI TO SUPPORT VEGETABLE FARMERS

The Kwara State Government has partnered the Nigerian Stored Products Research Institute (NSPRI) to assist vegetable farmers with modern equipment to strengthen their efficiency and reduce post harvest losses in the sector.

The State Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mrs. Oloruntoyosi Thomas disclosed this during her recent visit to a vegetable farm at Eruda in Ilorin West Local Government Area of the State.
The Commissioner, who was in company of the Management staff of NSPRI said the State Government in partnership with the agency, would empower the vegetable farmers with produce baskets, which have the capacity to preserve vegetables for at least a week after the harvested period.

Mrs. Thomas further informed the farmers of government proposed plan to establish a mini-mart within the area that can serve as a cold room with a view to giving the vegetables its freshness and prevent post harvest losses in the business.
The Executive Director, NSPRI, Prof. Lateef Oladimeji Sanni described the Eruda farm site as a horticulture zone that has the potential to meet the vegetable needs of the people within and outside the state.
Prof. Sanni urged the vegetable farmers and the merchants to consider the use of new technology to preserve their produce and prevent losses in the business.
