Food Security: Commissioner Visits Irrigation Sites For Dry Season Farming

The Kwara State Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mrs. Oloruntoyosi Thomas has embarked on an assessment visit to irrigation sites in the Kwara South Senatorial District of the state in preparation for this year's dry season farming.

The visit is a follow up to the discussion with the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi and Heads of Federal Agencies, under the Ministry in the state in order to achieve self-sufficiency in food production.

Speaking at the irrigation site in Oke-Igbala, Omu-Aran, Irepodun Local Government, the Commissioner said the state government is partnering with the federal government through the Lower Niger River Basin Development Authority (LNRBDA), to banish hunger, ensure food sufficiency, and create job opportunities for both youths and women in the state.

She disclosed that the state government is committed to improving the enabling environment for farmers and advised the farmers in the community to form cluster groups with a view to benefiting from government assistance in the sector.

The Director, Engineering Services, Engr. (Dr.) Ezekiel Ariyo encouraged the farmers to ensure optimal use of the site and assured them of adequate technical support to improve their farming activities.

Earlier in his remarks, the officer in-charge of the site, Engr. Hussain Hakeem informed the Commissioner that the site covered a 100 hectares of land, of which 50 hectares had already been used for farming activities during the wet season, while 20 hectares is used for dry season.

He identified sweet potatoes, soyabeans, and cassava as crops with comparative advantage which tend to grow well on the land, advising them against planting maize due to incidence of armyworms.
