Kwara Govt. Trains, Empowers Youths, Women, On Smart Farming
No fewer than 300 Youths and Women in agriculture have been trained and empowered by the Kwara State Government on smart agricultural practice.
The aim of the new approach to agricultural practice is to improve their technical skills in agricultural value chains, and equip them with financial literacy on how to start agric-business with little capital.
The programme, with the theme, "Ona abayo Lori bi aose jere nidi ise agbe pelu owo perete", literally means "solutions on how to make profit with little capital in farming business", was sponsored by the Kwara State Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in partnership with Methu Agricbusiness Refinery, held at the Ministry's Headquarters in Ilorin.
Addressing participants at the event, the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mrs. Oloruntoyosi Thomas said Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq would continue to prioritize the well-being and the success of subsistence farmers through his various interventions and empowerment programmes, in order to be self-sufficient in food and livestock productions in the state.
Mrs. Thomas stated that the essence of the programme is to share innovative techniques and equip the farmers with invaluable knowledge vital for their success in agricultural business, adding that the programme is also an avenue to educate the participants on the benefits in backyard farming.
According to her, the theme of the event is to tell how the present administration is supporting the farmers in a bid to improve the livelihood of the masses at the grassroots level.
She, however, urged the beneficiaries of the empowerment items not to sell them in order to encourage the government to do more towards achieving its objectives on food security in the state.
The Chairman, Methu Agricbusiness Refinery, Mr. Festus Omotola said his passion to assist the farmers to break through in their business prompted him to partner with the government, with a view to upscaling farming business in the state.
Mr. Omotola, who further appreciated the state government for giving him the platform to contribute his quota to the development of the agricultural sector, enjoined the beneficiaries to ensure judicious use of the knowledge acquired and items distributed.
In their separate reactions, two of the participants, Mr. Kolapo Ayinla and Mrs. Bilikis Bolanle Lukman, thanked the organizers of the programme and assured that both the empowerment items and knowledge acquired would be properly put into use in their subsequent farming activities.
Items distributed include Juvenile fish with Tarpaulins ponds, Rabbit with rabbit cages, yam and cocoa seedlings, and sweet potato vines, among others.
