Kwara Farmers Commends Government On MTP's Farming Model. ...As Commissioner paid an unscheduled visit to the Farms.

Indigenous farmers in Kwara State have commended the State Government on the effectiveness of the Management Training Plots (MTP) farming model and its potential to improve the output of agricultural produce in the State.
This commendation was made during the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mrs. Oloruntoyosi Thomas on the spot inspection visit to some of the farms across the three Senatorial Districts of the State.
Speaking on behalf of other farmers at the cluster farm in Oke-Onigbin Isin Local Government Area of the State, Mr. Oloyede Ezekiel appreciated the State Government for the opportunity to learn firsthand good agronomy practices, as well as access to improved inputs, all of which will translate to higher yields, better income for farmers and ultimately food security for the state.
He also advocated to the state government a replication of the cluster model on a larger scale across the 16 Local Government Areas of the State, especially for the upcoming dry season farming in view of the success already recorded with the model.
All the farmers in the MTP programme visited across the three senatorial districts confirmed to have benefitted tremendously from the programme and pledged to replicate what they have learnt on their own farms.
While responding, the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mrs. Thomas said the MTP model would be a catalyst for food security, especially the idea of putting farmers in clusters as it will automatically address a lot of the challenges the farmers encounter, and also enable the government to support the farmers more effectively and efficiently.
She also commended the commitment of farmers to the success of the project.
Appreciating the Management of Kwara ADP on training of the farmers through the establishment of Management Training Plots (MTP) project, Mrs. Thomas pledged continued support to the agency to carry out of their official mandates.
In her remarks, the Managing Director, Kwara ADP, Dr. Khadijat Ahmed explained that the essence of MTP project, also known as demonstration farm, is to ensure good agronomy practices through the deployment of technology and improved seeds.
Dr. Ahmed further disclosed that the farmers were given free inputs with extension services support to execute the demonstration farm project and subsequently expected to replicate it on a larger scale for increase food production in the State.
"The programme is to ensure that farmers were trained on modern method of farming practices through establishment of demonstration farms across the three Senatorial Districts of the State with the provision of necessary inputs and technical support from the government through Kwara ADP to serve as a pilot farm to other farmers in the Communities".
The ADP Zonal Coordinator, Mr. AbdulRahman Lawal appreciated the Commissioner's visit describing it as a moral booster to the farmers and assured her that the farmers will be given adequate attention at all times.
