KWSG Embarks On State Wide Sensitization Campaign on Anthrax Disease. ....takes campaign to abattoirs and slaughter slabs.
The Kwara State Government has commenced a state-wide sensitization campaign exercise, on the prevention and control of anthrax disease with stakeholders engagement and inspection of some of the abattoir markets and slaughter slabs in the Ilorin metropolis.
The team, which comprised officials from the State Ministries of Health, Environment, Agriculture and Rural Development, led by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Abubakar Ayinla sensitized the butchers and other stakeholders in livestock value chain on the implications of anthrax disease to the well-being of the people.
Dr. Ayinla explained that the sensitization exercise is one of the preventive measures taken to curb the spread of anthrax disease in the state.
The Permanent Secretary appealed to the butchers and value chain operators in livestock business to ensure that only healthy animals are slaughtered for the consumption of the public, advising them to maintain a hygienic environment.
Dr. Ayinla further enjoined the stakeholders to cooperate with the state inspection team, with a view to ensuring the safety of the public against any form of zoonotic diseases in the state.
On her part, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Mrs. Elizabeth Samuel urged the stakeholders, especially the slaughter slab operators and butchers, to maintain a hygienic environment to prevent disease outbreak in the state.
She also advised them to ensure proper disposal of wastes by patronizing only registered waste management consultants in the state.
In his remarks, the Director of Veterinary Services, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. AbdulLateef Olugbon disclosed that anthrax is a zoonotic disease that can be contacted through an infected animal or a contaminated animal products like hide and skin.
Dr. Olugbon said the exercise is to sensitize the stakeholders on the outbreak of anthrax in neighbouring countries and the need to prevent it from entering the country in view of our proximity.
"There is the need for them not to bring unhealthy cattles into the country and avoid bringing in hide and skin as they are prone to the disease", Olugbon said.
He identified some symptoms of anthrax in animals as staggering, convulsive movement, sudden collapse, and bleeding through the nose, ears, and other natural openings.
Olugbon advised them to notify the Ministry or any Veterinary Office in the state whenever they notice any of the identified symptoms in their animals for proper treatment.
In their separate responses, the Seriki Fawa of Abubakar Saraki Abattoir, Alh. Suleiman Muhammad and the Chairman, Ojatuntun Butchers Association, Alhaji Shehu Musa assured the state government of their support in preventing anthrax disease from entering the state.
Places visited are; Kulende slaughter slab in Ilorin South Local Government, Abubakar Saraki Abattoir Market, Akarebiata, Ilorin East, others are Ojatuntun Slaughter House, Mandate Market's slaughter slab and some private slaughter house in Ilorin metropolis.
