World Egg Day: KWSG Calls for Collaboration on Nutritious Food Security
The Kwara State Government has called for synergy among the stakeholders in livestock sub-sector on nutritious food security in the Country.
The Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mallam Gidado AbdulLateef Alakawa made the call at the commemoration of this year's world egg day, organized by the Kwara Chapter of Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), held at Millennium Nice Peak Hotel in Ilorin.
Mallam Alakawa said for the country to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs) on zero hunger and well-being of the people, the stakeholders in livestock value chain has a major role to play in sensitizing the public on the importance of nutritious food, especially egg intake to the development of human body system.
"Eggs are among the most cheapest nutritious foods that contain every nutrients needed by man which includes inmmune building, brain building and some hard-to-get nutrients like vitamins D and B12 including iodine", he said.
Explaining the strategic position of the state in poultry business; the Commissioner noted that Kwara State remains one of the few States with comparative advantage of having one of the largest feed mills, three large commercial poultry hatcheries, excellent climate and environment for poultry production, adding that the present administration is proactively working on harnessing these to the benefits of poultry farmers and the populace.
He reiterated the state government readiness for partnership in achieving food and nutrition security, in order to make poultry products remain within the reach of the less privileged in the society.
Earlier in his welcome address, the State Chairman of PAN, Deacon Ojo Akinwunmi Rechard disclosed that world egg day is specially set aside by the International Egg Commission to raise awareness on the importance of egg to human development.
Deacon Richard explained that despite the challenges of poultry business in the country due to insecurity and other factors, his members still weathered the storm to ensure that poultry products are available for human consumption.
He appreciated the State Government support to the association and further solicited for more especially in the area of soft loan to the registered members.
