KWSG, Agric Experts Charge Farmers on Good Agronomics Practice.

The Kwara State Government and Agricultural experts have charged farmers on best agronomics practice to improve high quality yields that are of good standard required in both local and global markets.

The State Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Hon. Saba Gideon, gave this charge at a training workshop on Organic Soybean Farming for Export organised by Nigeria Soybean Association (NSA) Kwara State Chapter, held at Savannah Hotel in Ilorin.

Hon. Gideon expressed   the present administration's  determination to transform agricultural sector from being a social service to a profitable Agro-business aimed at providing technical expertise to support investment.

The Commissioner, who was represented by the Director of Agriculture Services, Mallam Alhassan Kabir Mohammed,  ascribed the recent partnership with the Ecological Organic Agriculture Initiative in Nigeria to mainstream organic farming into the State's Agricultural Production System as one of the steps taken to improve the quality of life of the citizens in the State.
He urged the participants to be actively involved in the technical session with a view to spread the acquired knowledge to other grassroot farmers in their various locality.
In her Goodwill Message,  the State Commissioner for Business, Innovation and Technology, Hajia Ariola Fatimah Lawal commended the organisers' determination to rekindle the psyche of the farmers on the organic soybean farming in  order to bring greater output and also to enhance farmers' income as well as to increase revenue growth of the State.

Hajia Lawal, represented by the Director of Commerce of the Ministry, Alhaji Ibrahim Sanni, explained that the seminar would create more awareness on the economic values of the Soybean sub-sector to the growth and development of the State and the Country at large.

According to her "Kwara State has a great potential for non-oil export commodity products ranging from Soybean, Cashew nuts, Shea butter, cassava to Solid Minerals which are available in the State for exploration and export" She said.
The Trade Promotion Advisor, Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) Ilorin Office, Mr. Ayinde Mosadioluwa disclosed that the event was in line with the Council's drive in diversifying the nation's economy through the promotion of non-oil export.

He explained that the Council had organised several capacity trainings for the value chain operators on the potential of soyabeans value chain for export and improve livelihood as well as acceptable practice across the soyabeans value chain for enhance produce yield and quality improvement for export.

Mr Ayinde identified inadequate support, lack of capacity building for farmers on production, processing, packaging, good agricultural practices (GAP) as some of the impediment in soyabeans sub-sector and noted that the sector has the potential to generate huge amount of foreign exchange earnings for the country.

In his  welcome address, the NSA State Chairman, Mr. Olawoyin Yinka Solomon, said the event was organised to train the trainers that would ensure the sustainability and continuous training of the farmers across the State on Soybean Farming using Organic method.

Enumerating some of the advantages of Organic Soybean, Mr. Olawoyin said Soybean improves soil fertility by adding nitrogen from the atmosphere and the method also provides high quality yields that are of good standard which is required in both local and global market.
He appealed to government at all levels and corporate organisations to support the initiative through the provision of agricultural machineries, technical and financial support.
