KWSG Reiterates Commitment to Cash Crops Development

The Kwara State Government has restated its commitment to the development of Cash Crops production in the State.
The State Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, stated this today at the inauguration of the Kwara State Cashew Nursery Management Committee (CNMC), jointly organized by the Kwara State Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the United States Department of Agriculture West Africa Pro-Cashew Project at the State Banquet Hall, Ilorin.
The Governor, who was represented at the ceremony by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Shaba Maman Jubrin disclosed that the Pro-Cashew Project is a testament of the open door policy of the present administration to the development of agriculture in the State.
"Our partnership with private sectors like this organization is a clear evidence of the open door policy of the present administration towards the development of agriculture and fulfilment of our promises to provide enabling environment for research, investment, businesses especially agro-business sub-sector", the governor said.
Gov. AbdulRazaq disclosed that the state government is committed to cash crops development with a view to enhancing both domestic and foreign earnings.
He explained further that the State is endowed with favourable climate and good soil condition that permit mass production of Cocoa, Palm Oil, Cashew and other valuable tree crops, adding that the Horticulcure Division of the State Ministry of Agriculture has been strengthened to raise highly yield seedlings for qualitative and quantitative production of tree crops varieties in the State.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Hon. Saba Gideon while appreciating the project facilitator, enjoined the would-be beneficiaries to ensure proper planting of the seedlings in order to have better results.
Hon. Gideon also charged the value chain players in attendance to device a means of extracting and packaging cashew juice to eliminate the current trend of wastage of cashew fruit in the Country.
The Commissioner further appreciated Governor AbdulRazaq's support towards tree crops development through the provision of necessary machineries in order to place the State among the highest Cashew producing States in the Country.
In her welcome address, the Project Manager (Mcgeorge), Dr.(Mrs.) Kemi Omotosho explained that the Pro-Cashew Project is aimed at boosting the competitiveness of West African cashew producers by improving efficiency and quality in production and trade, and as well develop coherent regional trade and investment policies for the cashew sector.
According to her, the Project, which is to develop incentives to renovate and rehabilitate cashew farms, is targeting over 10,000 small holders farmers across cluster groups in five Local Governments of the State which include Isin, Ifelodun, and Irepodun in (Kwara South), Asa (Kwara Central) and Baruten (Kwara North).
The Country Representative, Pro-Cashew Nigeria Cultivating New Frontiers in Agriculture (CNFA), Mr. Olorunfemi Oloruntoyin said one of the major challenges of farmers in the country is the access to quality inputs which is the reason the organization is partnering the State Government, to profer lasting and permanent solution to Cashew and other tree crops sub-sector through training in seed multiplication system, good agronomy practice and gratting technique.
